Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about giving directly through Ashar.
What is Ashar?
Ashar is a platform that lets you give directly to a specific person experiencing homelessness. You browse real profiles, choose someone, select the items they have requested, and those items are delivered directly to that individual.
How is Ashar different from donating to a charity or general cause?
When you give to a "cause", your money is pooled and the organization decides how it is used — you rarely know where it ended up or how much covered overhead and administrative costs. With Ashar, you choose the exact person and the exact items, and they go to that individual. You always know precisely where your help went.
How do I give directly to a homeless person on Ashar?
Create a free account, browse profiles of real people in need, choose someone whose story resonates with you, pick from the specific items they have requested (or add your own), and check out. Ashar then delivers the items directly to that individual.
Is my gift tax-deductible?
No. Because your gift will be going to a specific individual, it is not tax-deductible — U.S. tax law does not allow a gift earmarked for a specific person to be deducted. That same rule is why charities cannot let you choose exactly who your money helps. Ashar trades the tax write-off for the certainty that your gift reaches the exact person you chose.
Why can Ashar give to a specific individual when most charities cannot?
Nonprofit (501(c)(3)) organizations are legally required to keep full control and discretion over donations and cannot direct an earmarked gift to a named person. Ashar is not a nonprofit, so it is not bound by that limitation — your gift can go to the individual you selected.
What kinds of items can I give?
The specific items each person has requested — such as clothing, shoes, hygiene products, diapers, coats and blankets, and purpose-built vouchers like housing or job-training vouchers. You can also add other items you feel would help.
How are people and their needs verified?
Ashar field agents interview and register each individual in person. The people we serve may be living on the street, in homeless encampments, or in shelters. During registration, each person shares their primary needs, and for items like clothing and shoes we gather additional details such as the correct size — so the gifts you send are things they genuinely need and can use.
How do the items reach the person?
Ashar has drivers that deliver the actual items to the individual you chose, cash is never delivered.
Who can I help on Ashar?
People from many circumstances with the primary focus being the homeless, including veterans, homeless teens, senior citizens, families, and people recovering from interpersonal violence. You choose who resonates with you.
Does it cost anything to use Ashar?
Creating an account is free. When you give, you pay for the items you choose to be delivered, plus any delivery or handling shown at checkout.
Is my personal information safe?
Yes. See our Privacy Policy for details on how Ashar collects, uses, and protects your information.
